The Barbados Diabetes Foundation with the assistance of the Lions Club of Barbados collected donations at the recently concluded 3rd ICC Test Match, West Indies vs South Africa, as part of their outreach to raise the awareness of diabetes care and treatment on the island. Whilst the West Indies cricket team was battling against South Africa, The Diabetes Foundation was leading the charge for diabetes research, education and advocacy.  This was accomplished through donations collected on the 3rd day of the match during the lunch and tea intervals.

Financial Officer of the Diabetes Foundation, Dwight Edghill said that the Foundation was very touched by the generosity of Barbadians and extended his organisation’s expression of thanks to the fans and  the Lion’s Club of Barbados who immediately came on board and helped with the fund collection.

Although Windies supporters may have been disappointed by the eventual result of the match, they will be glad to know that their contributions are going toward a very worthy cause.

Statistics show that 3 out of every 10 Barbadians suffer from diabetes and about 4 persons become diabetic amputees on a weekly basis in the island. This situation is further compounded by the high morbidity rate of amputees.

Among the Foundation’s outreach plans for the year is the Diabetes Today Magazine due this summer and the Annual Global Village Expo slated for World Diabetes Day in November.
